Clinical Science Graduate Student

My name is Nick Nguyen and I’m a second-year doctoral student in the Clinical Science program at UC Berkeley, under the mentorship of Dr. Stephen Hinshaw and Dr. Keanan Joyner. I received my B.A. in Psychology from UC Berkeley where I also completed an honors thesis exploring the association between parenting practices and resilience among young girls with ADHD. Before heading back to Cal for my PhD, I spent over six years working as a research specialist at WestCoast Children’s Clinic, leveraging data to support and advocate for communities that have been historically underrepresented, underserved, and vulnerable. When not at work, I enjoy spending time with my family (e.g., cooking new dishes, playing with my two dogs) and tackling my ever-growing catalog of video games.

Current Work

My research interests include: developmental psychopathology; social determinants of health; trauma and resilience; mental health stigma reduction; health equity; and policy advocacy. My work is generously supported by the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, the UC Berkeley Chancellor’s Fellowship, as well as UCLA and the Child Mind Institute. My long-term goal is to become a professor—running my own lab and doing meaningful science with my collaborators—and apply science to develop a more compassionate society, especially for those from marginalized communities.

Currently, I’m working on using geocoding techniques to investigate neighborhood resources as potential protective factors for youth experiencing trauma. I’m also working on distilling and translating research on neurodevelopmental conditions (e.g., ADHD, ASD, dyslexia) to create infographics that can be used to help promote mental health literacy and reduce stigma. Finally, I’m also developing a pilot study with my colleagues to study the impacts of intergenerational trauma on mental health outcomes of Vietnamese communities and explore how social and cultural capitals might be able to help these folks overcome their adversities and thrive.
